The Sargeant Museum of Louisa County History

The Sargeant Museum of Louisa County History tells the history of Louisa County through six permanent displays. Together, they introduce visitors to Louisa County and its place in American history.

The Sargeant Museum also showcases temporary exhibits that highlight historically significant time periods, places, people, and items from our collections.

The Sargeant Museum of Louisa County History is located at 214 Fredericksburg Avenue, Louisa, VA 23093 across from Louisa Town Hall and the Louisa Arts Center.

We are open Monday-Friday from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm with special programs offered on specified weekends throughout the year. See our calendar for details.

The Sargeant Museum is closed when Louisa County Public Schools are closed due to inclement weather. The Museum is also closed on some holidays, including Memorial Day and July 4th. Please call before visiting on a holiday.

The Sargeant-Pettit House

In late 2002, the Town of Louisa purchased the historic Louisa County High School property. Restoration of the old high school began in 2005 to adapt the building for the new Louisa Town Hall and Arts Center.

Included on the 12.4 acre site is the handsome two-story former residence of the families of J. Frank Sargeant and W. A. Claude Pettit, Jr. J. Frank Sargeant, who built the house in 1914, owned the local hardware store. Claude Pettit, Jr. was a local businessman and Chrysler dealer.

The residence, known locally as the Sargeant-Pettit House, was turned over to the Louisa County Historical Society for the expressed purpose of creating a County Museum and is now the headquarters for the Louisa County Historical Society.

The Heritage Farm

The Heritage Farm is a growing living history site located behind the Sargeant Museum of Louisa County History. The structures on the property help us achieve our mission to bring the history of Louisa County to life! We use them for special programming such as our open-hearth cooking workshops and free family days.

The Michie House and Smoke House were relocated to our property and restored in 2013. The Trevilians Schoolhouse was relocated to our property and restored in 2017.

Due to our small staff size, please call ahead if you would like to see the Heritage Farm buildings during your visit. They are not open at all times, but we are happy to give you a tour!
